The Timeline

23/2/2017

The first week back and we have been shaking off the cobwebs and turning the cogs once more!
We have had a little refresher and once again stepped back into the past, this time with the help of the Montessori timeline (see picture).

It was awesome!

We lay the timeline along the nursery classroom – it was so long that we had to double it  back on itself. We all walked step by step from the start of time to the present day, and we counted our steps.
The yellow,  and longest part of the timeline, symbolised the start of the universe with all the planets, stars, moons,  and galaxies coming into being; that took 32 steps.

Next came the blue part of the timeline – the rains and oceans forming and the first life on Earth – that was 8 steps.

Then the brown part of the timeline;  life on land – and in particular the dinosaurs –  2 steps.
The meteorite landed! Now for the green part! The dinosaurs were wiped out and small mammals survived and grew in size – not even one step! We measured the length of one foot.

And finally at the end of the timeline there is a little red tip – that symbolises the time humans have lived on the earth. It was so tiny we could hardly measure it – a small toe!

And the children recognised that humans have really not been on earth for very long at all...

Lastly! At the end of the day when we were tidying the garden up, one helpful chap was giving me a hand moving our slide.
'I am very strong.' he let me know.
I completely agreed with him and reflected - all out loud- that I wished I was as strong as him.
I pondered 'I wonder why I'm not as strong as you?'
'It's because you are really old.' he let me know!
Thanks!  'Which part of the timeline would you find me in?!'...

Planets!

9/2/2017

Lots of lovely moments as we defied gravity and headed in search of planets.

One boy said we should definitely travel in a space shuttle and not an aeroplane as 'do you know it looks just like an aeroplane but it travels into space and you come back in a pod.'
So that's what we did! We fell to earth with a bang and met an Ofsted inspector..
'Who is that?!' one of the children asked.
'A special visitor.' I replied.
'Is she the Queen?' A boy asked.
Hmmm.. how should I reply?! 'Go and ask her.'
'When I've finished my work I will.'
He forgot.

We talked about what would happen if the sun fell out of the sky and the children thought hard.
'I think we would have to start all over again. There would be a Big Bang and the earth would be hot and the rain would come, then the dinosaurs would come and go and my mummy and daddy would have to make me all over again.'  Sweet. :-)

Then the  children got messy making their own papier-mâché planets. You can see them below in orbit!  Glue, newspapers, balloons and fun!

Happy half term to one and all!
